You were young, your room was a mess y mami tenia el palo de trapear in hand and was yelling at you to recoger. Instead, you were on the phone, playing video games, painting your nails or fighting with your siblings. When she finally realized you weren’t doing what was supposed to be done, she called you by your name, her loud, Cuban voice bellowing out your first, middle and last name(s) and said, “Hagame el favor, para de comer lo que pica el pollo.”
Lo Que Pica El Gallo is a movement to do just that; to stop eating at what the chickens peck at (or eat) and move on to greater things. Lo Que Pica El Gallo derives from that very saying, of speaking or doing (in the sense of the idiom) what the chickens eat. And since Gallos are older and more mature than chickens in general, we like to think of our content on LQPG as a lot more sophisticated. We’ve grown and started to pick at bigger and better things. Don’t let the name fool you, although our opinions about our habits, our culture and our customs are radical and exaggerated, the truth behind our Cubanism is in-tact and is far from feces per say. We would never undermine our content, we just don’t want anyone to take any offense to some of the nonsense that may come out of our humor. Follow us as we trace our memories of growing up in our Cuban households as first generation Americans, and share with you our insights, experiences and discoveries across the hectic streets of Miami.
P.S. You are welcome to guest post anytime over at Sweet Home Hialeah!
Thanks!!! As are you. Although we may need a tutorial on how exactly that works. We’re new to word press. Please pass along our blog to anyone you know who may be of interest.
Why’d you choose “gallo” vs “pollo”?
honestly, i got my idioms mixed up. I always hear estas comiendo lo que pica el gallo. regardless, it gets the point across.
I love this blog! My gringo(from Pinecrest) & I(Coral Gables) moved out to Portland, OR hace siete years and I really miss FOOD, FAMILIA, the sun, driving around different barrios to check out the new things and just hearing people speak Spanish the same way I do, a la velocidad de un pedo and all mixed up with other languages (my fam’s Chino- Cubano)!
Well in that case, bienvenido. I hope our posts bring you a little piece of home all the way to Portland. And I must say, I don’t know many chino-cubano families. Must make for some interesting family events.
Cubans are the most diverse….. I think this is why we’re loved and envied
I have heard of Cuban Chinos in Cuba there is a little china town !
I LOVE this blog!!! You two rock. I lived in Miami for about six months in 2009 but was transferred back to California. I have been homesick for Miami ever since. I live in LA (all of my LA friends say, well isn’t Miami like LA, it’s sunny and there are Palm Trees? And I want to hit them with a chancleta) I’m not the least bit Latina (but love the culture) and have to live vicariously through your posts. Keep blogging!
You don’t know how refreshing, exiting and honoring it is to know that our humorous hobby of capturing our encounters relates to many cubans and gringas alike. We’re so glad you enjoy them. And we’re proud that you would use a chancleta as a weapon against anyone who thinks LA is anything remotely like Miami. Thanks for the support! We truly are humbled to have readers from all the way across the country!
